Save. Yes its possible to travel by train from Penang to Hatyai. BUT. its not from Penang island nor from Butterworth. You will need to catch the train from Bukit Mertajam (BM) which is like 30 mins away from Penang. The train journey is going to be around 5 hours. The earliest is at 8am, arriving in Phuket at 3pm. You could also leave Hat Yai as late 1pm and get to Phuket for 8pm, in time for a late dinner!
